Haliburton Forest & Wild Life Reserve Limited
- A pristine wilderness in the heart of Ontario's Haliburton Highlands.
Each year Haliburton Forest organizes a variety of outdoor-related programs and special events for nature enthusiasts. Well known experts in their fields will introduce you to the wonders of nature and skills you didn 't know you had. Cozy accommodation and hearty meals are provided for many of the programs. The current schedule is listed below, choose your favorite and contact us for registration where required.
Events for 2008:
January 26th - Easter Seals Snowarama
This 100km snowmobile ride along the groomed
trails of Haliburton Forest is a fundraiser for the
EasterSeals Society, organised by the Haliburton
Rotary Club. Pledge Sheets or detailed information
can be obtained from Haliburton Rotary or David

February 16th - Snowmobile Poker
Run
This popular fundraising event is now in its
20th year. Participants will gather token cards
along the trail, which can be traded for a Poker
hand upon return to the entrance point at Haliburton
Forest. The winning hand will walk away with a brand
new 2008 snowmobile. Many other prizes are awarded.
All proceeds are collected for the Haliburton
Volunteer Fire Department.

Search of the Elusive Wolf

This is a one-day snowshoe experience into Wolf
Country guided by a Wild Life Biologist.
The day will be spent exploring
the hills and valleys on snowshoes looking for
evidence of the wolf in our forests. Your
host and guide for the day is Haliburton Forest’s
resident wildlife biologist, who possesses a
tremendous amount of knowledge about the flora and
fauna of the area and who is presently doing
research on wolf predation on deer.
Snowshoes will be provided for participants who will
not bring their
own.
Fee: $45.00/adult,
$35.00/youth *Youth must be able to spend an active
day outside
May 9 - Conference : Celebration of Research Research
partners at Haliburton Forest are reporting on their
past and proposed research - from forest ecology and
climate change to wolves and flying squirrels

June 30 - July 4 - Youth Day Camp
A week of outdoor activities and excitement for youths aged 8 to 12. Canoeing, wilderness travel, large group games, wolf studies, tracking and so much more.
Fee: $165.00 per youth
July 7 -11 - Youth Wilderness Experience
A week long outdoor leadership residential camp for youths aged 10 - 14. Building on the successes of previous day- and adventure camps, this one week experience will take youths into the wilderness to be exposed to activities such as canoeing and kajaking, rock climbing, ropes course, orienteering, astronomy, night hikes etc. This is an exciting opportunity for youths interested in taking their wilderness experience to a new level.
Fee: $ 400 per week, including all programming, meals, and accommodation.
July 11- 13 Family Wilderness Camp
A
weekend of wilderness adventure for the whole
family. Bring your own camping equipment or use ours
and let our staff teach you the basics of camping to
make your future camping trips a relaxing and
enjoyable experience. Some of the activities
included in this weekend are no-trace camping
methods, cooking in the wild, wilderness first aid
basics, bear wise camping, canoeing, hiking,
wilderness navigation and more. Evening programs
will include campfires, astronomy programs &
wolf howls. Your family will never experience
stressful camping again!
Fee:
$135.00 per adult $125.00 per child under 16yrs.

July 25-27 1st Annual Butterfly and Dragonfly Count
This is your opportunity to become a citizen scientist working along side a number of professional naturalists. No experience is necessary as there will be many experts and enthusiast to help you catch and identify these remarkable insects.
Fee: $65/day or $300 for the weekend
July 28 - August 1st - Youth Adventure Day Camp
A week of outdoor activities and excitement for youths aged 12 to 14. Canoeing, wilderness navigation, wolf studies, rock climbing and so much more has been established to build on the skills of past participants or youth that have some experience in the out-of-doors. Optional overnight canoe trip.
Fee: $165.00 per youth/ 185.00 incl. overnight trip

8 - 10 - Family Adventure Camp
Spend the weekend with your
family exploring our adventure based programs. The
weekend will include our High Ropes Course, Rock
Climbing, Mountain Biking, Canoeing, Hiking,
Wilderness navigation with GPS, Teambuilding &
Leadership skills, family style. Our professional
outdoor education staff will guide your family
through our experiential education program providing
new options and tools to aid your family in working
more closely as a team! Evening programs will
include campfires, astronomy programs & wolf
howls.
Fee: $162.00 per
adult $152.00 per child under 16yrs. (includes
professional guides & meals)
August 11 - 15 - Youth Day Camp
A week of outdoor activities and excitement for youths aged 8 to 12. Canoeing, wilderness travel, large group games, wolf studies, tracking and so much more.

22-24 Women Only Adventure Weekend Bring
your wild sense of adventure and challenge your
inner child to a weekend of hanging out with the
girls in a pristine private lakeside setting. This
weekend will teach you valuable skills in outdoor
living. Our professional female staff will guide you
canoeing, teach you GPS use, and encourage you to
push your limits on our high ropes challenge course
and rock climbing wall. Learn new recipes for
outdoor cooking & some valuable wilderness
survival tools. Awaken your abilities in the
wilderness with the support of other women sharing
in this worthwhile experience. You will be staying
at our Solar Powered facility located on the shores
of Stocking Lake. Enjoy the silence of this remote
location and rejuvenate yourself!

August 22, 23 & 24- Wolves and Wildlife
A great weekend getaway is planned that includes informative discussions and presentations on wolves. Topics will include wolf biology, social structure, wolf/human relations and predator/prey interaction. Guest speakers are adding to this fascinating weekend. Time will be spent viewing our resident pack, observing an interpreted feeding and taking a hike into wolf country. As our guest, you will enjoy the comforts of our cosy accommodation and delicious meals served at the Cookhouse Restaurant. The weekend is topped off with an evening wolf howl. Ensure to bring a camera for this engaging weekend getaway.

August 22 - September 1st - The Forest
Festival
An ecological music extravaganza, which grew out of
the Patria performances by legendary composer R. Murray Schafer.
Mostly performed at the Bone Lake amphitheatre on the shores of a wilderness
lake within Haliburton Forest, a series of
performances will be presented, which are significant, remarkable and unique
in Canadian music theatre creation. Important Canadian
musicians and performers will dazzle the audience
with their work presented in a natural environment
unrivalled in their natural and acoustic appeal.

Iconic composer, writer, educator and environmentalist
R. Murray Schafer remains involved and committed to
The Forest Festival and participants may want to
join workshops under his auspices. Many performances
in The Forest Festival follow the fundamental
parameters for "acoustic ecology"
established by R. Murray Schafer many decades
ago.
September 6/7 - Haliburton Forest "100/50/50" Ultra Run
Running is not for everyone, but for some it is everything. The Haliburton Forest 100/50/50 offers ultra runners a choice between 50 kilometer, 50 mile and 100 mile runs through some of the most beautiful scenery the area has to offer. Participate and test your endurance at this sanctioned event.
Fee: $50.00 for 50 kilometer or 50 mile run $130.00 for 100 mile run
October 31, November 1 & 2
- Wolves and Wildlife

2008 Summer Programs - July & August
Wolf Howl
Every Thursday Evening at 8pm
Every Thursday evening in July and August, Haliburton Forest offers a public wolf howl. Starting at 8 pm and taking place at the Base Camp, visitors gather at our seminar building to hear a presentation on wolves,
their ecology and relationship to humans. After this presentation, the group is taken for a short hike where
an interpreter will attempt to "howl up" our resident pack. We can not guarantee a response,
however, we do have a good track-record ! This event offers another great family outing at Haliburton Forest.
Pre-registration is not required and payment is by donation.
Natural History Presentations
Every Tuesday and Wednesday Evening at 7 pm
Haliburton Forest offers a wide variety of landscapes, ecosystems and habitats. In partnership with organisations and individuals, many facets of this diverse web of life has been explored over the past years. The 1 - 2 hour presentations will focus on this research and will be delivered by the experts themselves. There is no fee and preregistration is not required. Topics and presenters are to be announced.
Astronomy Program
Every Sunday and Monday Evening at 9 pm
You are welcomed to join a fascinating evening under the stars. Haliburton Forest staff will take you out to the on-site, dark sky observatory to view and learn about the night sky. This outdoor program will only be held on clear nights ! In case of cloudy nights, an exciting indoor, planetarium program awaits visitors.. Pre-registration is required since space is limited to 20 participants.
Fee: $ 20 per adult and $ 15 children/youth under 18
