Haliburton Forest & Wild Life Reserve Limited
- A pristine wilderness in the heart of Ontario's Haliburton Highlands.
Each year Haliburton Forest organizes a variety of outdoor-related programs and special events for nature enthusiasts. Well known experts in their fields will introduce you to the wonders of nature and skills you didn 't know you had. Cozy accommodation and hearty meals are provided for many of the programs. The current schedule is listed below, choose your favorite and contact us for registration where required.
Pre Registration is Required for all of the following programs. Please request a Camper Registration Form and health Record, Consent and Waiver of Liability Form to register yourself or your child.
Events for
late 2009
Wolves and Wildlife - October 30 - November 1
A great weekend getaway is planned that includes informative discussions and presentations on wolves. Topics will include wolf biology, social structure, wolf/human relations and predator/prey interaction. Guest speakers are adding to this fascinating weekend. Time will be spent viewing our resident pack, observing an interpreted feeding and taking a hike into wolf country. As our guest, you will enjoy the comforts of our cosy accommodation and delicious meals served at the Cookhouse Restaurant. The weekend is topped off with an evening wolf howl. Ensure to bring a camera for this engaging weekend getaway.

A Weekend for the Dogs
November 27-29 and December
4-6
THIS WEEKEND IS NOT FOR THE FAINT AT HEART ! When
the skies turn cool in November, the 135 Siberian
Huskies at Haliburton Forest are getting itchy feet:
In November and December the guides start to
condition the huskies in anticipation of the
upcoming dogsledding season. Participants in this
unique weekend will have the opportunity to join the
select group of professional guides to train and
condition the eager dogs - and go for the ride of
their lives ! The weekend will be full of dogs from
conditioning behind the cart ( and sled if snow
allows), the care of the dogs, a look behind
the scenes in one of Ontario's largest kennels as
well as general information around dogs and
dogsledding.
Please note that this is an active weekend !
Fee: $ 280/person, including 2
nights of accommodation, all meals and two or three
runs with the dogs.
Events
for 2010:
Snowshoe Trek and Winter Camping Weekend
- January 23 - 24 Participants
will spend a winter night in the outdoors at
Haliburton Forest with a trained winter guide. The
weekend consists of two days of activity and
challenge in the wilderness. Your guide will lead by
snowshoe to the night's winter campsite, where the
group will be introduced to tenting and cooking in
the winter. This introduction to winter camping will
occur in safe proximity to Haliburton Forest's Base
Camp and under the close supervision of trained
guides. The weekend will be highly active and will
require a sense of adventure and spirit on the part
of the participants. All necessary camping gear will
be provided. Participants are required to dress for
winter weather and are required to bring a sleeping
bag rated for at least -15
degrees.
Fee: $ 145/person
Women's Winter Outdoor Adventure
Weekend - January 29 -
31
This is a call to all adventure minded ladies to
a weekend of adventure and fun, including a
dogsledding excursion ! Participants will be
provided with dorm-style accommodation at Haliburton
Forest's Base Camp, which will serve as a base for
numerous activities and expeditions into the Forest.
These include snowshoeing, cross-country skiing, a
visit to the Wolf Centre and winter shelter
building. Saturday afternoon is spent on the trails
with dogsled. All meals are included and prepared by
the guides with the assistance of the group.
Participants are required to dress appropriate for
winter conditions and bring a sense of
adventure.
Fee: $ 375/participant
Annual Snowmobile Poker Run - February
20th This popular fundraising event is now in its
21st year and has grown to be one of the largest and
most successful events of its kind in Ontario. Participants will gather token cards
along the trail, which can be traded for a Poker
hand upon return to the entrance point at Haliburton
Forest. The winning hand will ride away with a brand
new 2010 model snowmobile. Many other prizes are awarded.
Registration is from 8:00 to 2:00 on the day of the
event and the checkpoints will close at 4:00pm. All proceeds are collected for the Haliburton
Volunteer Fire Department.

In
Search of the Elusive Wolf
February
27th
This is a one-day snowshoe experience into Wolf
Country guided by a Wild Life Biologist.
The day (9:00 –
4:00 ) will be spent exploring
the hills and valleys on snowshoes looking for
evidence of the wolf in our forests. Your
host and guide for the day is Haliburton Forest’s
resident wildlife biologist, who possesses a
tremendous amount of knowledge about the flora and
fauna of the area and who is presently doing
research on wolf predation on deer. Snowshoes will be provided for participants who will
not bring their
own.
Fee: $45.00/adult,

*Youths must be able to spend an active
day outside
March
Break at the Haliburton Forest Wolf Centre
March 15, 17 and
19
These 2 hour afternoon programs are designed for
younger visitors. Apart from viewing the wolves,
they will be guided through a number of
entertaining, yet educational activities and crafts.
They will
meet Twig, our resident gnome, who will lead through
a puppet show with a twist. The programs run from
1:30 -
3:30.
Fee: regular admission fees apply
March Break Day Camp at
Haliburton Forest
Participating youths will join our staff for 3 days
of adventure during March Break. This day camp will
provide youths aged 10 - 14 with a very active and
adventurous time. Activities for the 3 days will
include: X-country skiing, snowshoeing, winter
survival activities such as shelter building,
orienteering as well as visits to the Wolf Centre
and dog kennels. Participants are asked to bring
lunch for each
day.
Date: March 16 -18 ( Tuesday to Thursday ) - Time: 9
am to 4 pm

Conference : Celebration of Research -
May 7th Research
partners at Haliburton Forest are reporting on their
past and proposed research - from forest ecology and
climate change to wolves and flying squirrels.

Birdathon: - May 23rd - This
is an opportunity for all professional and amateur
birders to test their skills and put them to good
use: The information gathered will assist Haliburton
Forest in its longterm monitoring of our bird
populations.

Youth Day Camp I - June
28 - July 2
A week of outdoor activities and excitement for youths aged 8 to 12. Canoeing, wilderness travel,
group games, wolf studies, tracking, camp craft,
rock climbing and ropes course activities will be
some of the many activities to fill this exciting
week.
Fee: $150.00 per youth
Youth Wilderness Experience - July 5 - 9
A week long outdoor leadership residential camp for youths aged 10 -
14 building on the successes of previous day- and adventure
camps. This one week experience will take youths into the wilderness to be exposed to activities such as canoeing and kajaking, rock climbing, ropes course, orienteering, astronomy, night hikes etc. This is an exciting opportunity for youths interested in taking their wilderness experience to a new level.
Fee: $ 400 per week
Family Adventure Camp -
July 16-18 Participants
will spend the weekend with their family exploring our adventure based programs. The
weekend will include traversing the High Ropes Course, Rock
Climbing, Mountain Biking, Canoeing, Hiking,
Wilderness navigation with GPS, Teambuilding &
Leadership skills - family style. Our professional
outdoor education staff will guide your family
through our experiential education program providing
new options and tools to aid all participants in working
closely as a team! Evening programs will
include campfires, astronomy programs & wolf
howls.
Fee: $170.00 per
adult or $155.00 per child under 16yrs. (includes
professional guides & meals)
Women Only Adventure Weekend
- July 23 - 25
Bring
your wild sense of adventure and challenge your
inner child to a weekend of hanging out with the
girls in a pristine private lakeside setting. This
weekend will teach you valuable skills in outdoor
living. Our professional female staff will guide you
canoeing, teach you GPS use, and encourage you to
push your limits on our high ropes challenge course
and rock climbing wall. Learn new recipes for
outdoor cooking & some valuable wilderness
survival tools. Awaken your abilities in the
wilderness with the support of other women sharing
in this worthwhile experience. You will be staying
at our Solar Powered facility located on the shores
of Stocking Lake. Enjoy the silence of this remote
location and rejuvenate yourself!

Youth
Adventure Day Camp - July 26 -

This active camp is available to youths who have
developed a level of comfort in the outdoors. This
camp will involve one overnight experience on the
Thursday of the week. Activities include: canoeing,
kajaking, swmimming, wilderness travel, rafting,
rock climbing, high and low ropes as well as outdoor
pursuits such as tracking, orienteering and camping
skills. Ages: 10
- 14 Time: 9 am to 4 pm ( except Thursd.
) Fee:$170/youth
Star Watchers Astronomy Camp

July 30 - August 1st
Overnight: 4:00pm Friday - 11:00am Sunday.
Guests will explore the skies at Haliburton Forest ! This two-night camp offers the chance to learn about many different aspects of astronomy. Campers will have the chance to build their own kit of astronomer's tools. They will also learn about the science and mythology of astronomy, and have the chance to observe the skies using one or more of our
telescopes and explore it through our planetarium. Fee: $125.00 per person
Youth Day Camp II - August

A week of outdoor activities and excitement for youths aged 8 to 12. Canoeing, wilderness travel, group games, wolf studies, tracking,
camp craft, rock climbing and ropes course

The Forest Festival - August 18 -
22, 2010
This season's Forest Festival will run from
Wednesday evening August 18 to Sunday evening, August
22. Important Canadian musicians will dazzle the audience with their work, presented in a natural environment unrivalled in their natural and acoustic appeal.
Concerts will be held at two venues at Haliburton Forest: the stunning Amphitheatre that overlooks serene and isolated Bone Lake and the historic Logging Museum located at Base Camp.
We will be offering 7 exciting performances; 5 evening concerts and 2 matinees. Our outstanding lineup
is being established at the moment.
Visitors can also enjoy art installations of The Landart Project along forest
trails. The Forest Festival offers an unforgettable experience. Please join

September 11/12 - Haliburton Forest "100/50/50" Ultra Run
Running is not for everyone, but for some it is everything. The Haliburton Forest 100/50/50 offers ultra runners a choice between 50 kilometer, 50 mile and 100 mile runs through some of the most beautiful scenery the area has to offer. Participate and test your endurance at this sanctioned event.
Fee: $50.00 for 50 kilometer or 50 mile run $130.00 for 100 mile run
2010 Summer Evening Programs
Wolf Howl
Every Thursday Evening at 8pm
Every Thursday evening in July and August, Haliburton Forest offers a public wolf howl. Starting at 8 pm and taking place at the Base Camp, visitors gather at our seminar building to hear a presentation on wolves,
their ecology and relationship to humans. After this presentation, the group is taken for a short hike where
an interpreter will attempt to "howl up" our resident pack. We can not guarantee a response,
however, we do have a good track-record ! This event offers another great family outing at Haliburton Forest.
Pre-registration is not required and payment is by donation.
Natural History Presentations
Every Tuesday and Wednesday Evening at 7 pm
Haliburton Forest offers a wide variety of landscapes, ecosystems and habitats. In partnership with organisations and individuals, many facets of this diverse web of life has been explored over the past years. The 1 - 2 hour presentations will focus on this research and will be delivered by the experts themselves. There is no fee and preregistration is not required. Topics and presenters are to be announced.
Astronomy Program
Every Saturday and Sunday Evening at 9:30 pm
You are welcomed to join a fascinating evening under the stars. Haliburton Forest staff will take you out to the on-site, dark sky observatory to view and learn about the night sky. This outdoor program will only be held on clear nights ! In case of cloudy nights, an exciting indoor, planetarium program awaits visitors.. Pre-registration is required since space is limited to 20 participants.
